Interactive marketers and social media strategists interested in using brand monitoring must choose a tool based on business objectives, recognizing that the market now addresses three distinct applications:

1) mining customer insight to formulate strategy
2) quantifying social media to compare with other metrics and
3) identifying influencers in order to participate in online conversations.

On April 2, 2008, J.D. Power and Associates announced that it had acquired brand monitoring firm Umbria, combining industry-focused consumer satisfaction and rankings with CGM insights. This deal marks the third acquisition of a brand monitoring firm in the past three years. However, in this case the acquirer is not a media measurement firm, signaling a new direction for brand monitoring output. Over the past two years, brand monitoringofferings have evolved into three primary applications, which marketers need to realize when selecting a brand monitoring tool:

Mining consumer insight as an input into strategy formulation. Social media contains a wealth of valuable, unsolicited feedback to inform brand strategy — but in an unstructured format dispersed widely across the internet. Umbria provides a natural fit to J.D. Power’s traditional customer satisfaction research; the acquisition promises to help interactive marketers and social strategists to cull actionable insights from CGM based on speaker age, gender, and sentiment — employing an automated system. Other examples of firms competing in this space include MotiveQuest’s work to link MINI enthusiasts to sales and VML’s SEER applied to Adidas product development.

Quantifying CGM for combination with other enterprise-level metrics. Stores, factories and other businesses large and small showed workers the door last month, sending unemployment to its highest rate in four years and adding to the evidence an economic recovery remains far off.

Facts:
Employers clamped down on hiring and cut 51,000 jobs in July, the Labor Department said Friday. The economy has shed jobs each month this year - 463,000 in all.

Temporary help firms, also viewed as a barometer of demand for future hiring, eliminated 29,000 jobs. Those losses swamped job gains elsewhere, including in the government, education and health care.

Why?
Job losses in July were the heaviest in industries hard hit by the slow housing market, the clampdown on credit and the shaky financial sector. Manufacturers cut 35,000 jobs, construction companies 22,000 and retailers 17,000.

Unemployment Increase Going Up Fast
The increase in the unemployment rate in July came as many young people streamed into the labor market looking for summer jobs.

Fewer of them were able to find work. The unemployment rate for teenagers jumped to 20.3 percent, the highest since 1992.

Still, the job losses were not as bad as some feared. Economists were expecting 72,000 jobs lost for July. The government also revised the job-loss figures for May and June to a combined 98,000, down from 124,000.

All told, there were 8.8 million people unemployed in July, up from 7.1 million last year. The jobless rate last July was a full percentage point below where it was this July.
